"Aapki Awaaz" means "your voice" in Hindi. This song was inspired by the amazing South Asian-centric open mic Subcontinental Drift, which raises up voices that aren't heard enough and need to be heard much more.
lyrics
They said you needed to be quiet
They told you to be good
They tried their best to keep you silent
But you know they never could
All you wanted was to speak out
And now you're up there on the stage
The audience knows who to seek out
Watch them hang on every word you say
Aur apke shabde thik hei (And your words are good)
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, ringing in the night
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, bringing in the light
They said you'd never make a difference
They told you not to try
They told you that you should have more sense
To stop wasting your time
But when you march among the thousands
And your voices sound as one
It’s easy to drown out the doubters
Together maybe we can overcome
From sab munh to gagan! (From all mouths to heaven)
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, ringing in the night
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, bringing in the light
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, ringing strong, strong, strong
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, lingers for so long
And when you cry out
"I won't go back to how it was before!"
And when you shout out
"I'm not going to take it anymore!"
Let's hear your voice soar!
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, ringing in the night
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, bringing in the light
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, ringing strong, strong, strong
Awaaz, aapki awaaz, lingers for so long
